Popular Podcasts for Seniors
As we head into the cooler months, listening to podcasts is a great way to journey to far away lands, recall favorite childhood memories, or learn something new without leaving home.
How to Listen
You can listen to podcasts on one of many smart phone apps including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. Most podcasts are available to stream on the web, as well.
With so many to pick from, here are some podcasts you may want to consider based on their popularity among seniors.
- Lux Radio Theater
Some will remember this very popular radio series (1934 – 1955) where the brightest stars of the day performed. The announcer opened the show by saying, “Lux presents Hollywood!” Iconic film director and producer Cecil B. DeMille hosted the show for many years. A recent reviewer wrote about the podcast, “I love these. It’s like someone is reading me a bedtime story…♥️”
- The Handyguys Podcast
The Handyguys will help you do many things such as choose the best flooring for your kitchen, learn about energy-saving devices, install a dog door on an exterior door, and just about anything else a DIY’er might want to know.
- Good Job Brain
For all the Jeopardy! and Trivial Pursuit fans out there, each of the 204 episodes of this podcast features trivia on a particular theme such as the Wild West, things under the sea, and the origin of some slang words.
- This American Life
A radio show with 2.2 million weekly listeners, it debuted in 1995 and now has a catalog of over 700 episodes. To get started, you might want to check out host Ira Glass’s favorite shows. Or, look through the recommended lists with episodes grouped by categories such as Award Winners and Stories Kids Seem To Like.
- Planet Money
The description of this podcast sums it up the best (see what we did there?): “The economy explained. Imagine you could call up a friend and say, “Meet me at the bar and tell me what’s going on with the economy.” Now imagine that’s actually a fun evening.”
